  A1 OFFICIAL RULES
  Key points:
» The rules are similar to conventional “Freestyle Kickboxing Rules.”
» Where rules are not specified or need to be clarified, the A1 Representative shall be consulted.
» The 3 knockdown rule and standing 8 counts are in effect.
» Protective equipment to be worn: gloves, mouthguard, box
» The referee or doctor may stop the bout at any time.

1 Rounds
» Each fight is 3x3 mins, with a one minute break between rounds.
» You can not be saved by the bell in any round.

2 Priority for awarding points
1. number of knockdowns
2. damage inflicted on opponent
3. number of clean hits
4. degree of aggression

3 Judging
3.1 Judges are asked to be decisive in preliminary bouts.
3.2 In case of a draw an extra round is to be fought which will be judged separately.
3.3 There can be up to two extra rounds in a bout. If the final extra round is still drawn then a decision is to be made by the referee.

Draw is A/ no decision by judges
B/ both fighters knocked down for the count simultaneously

3.4 If a fighter is knocked down three times in a round in any bout it is a TKO.
3.5 The referee should stop a bout in which one fighter is overwhelmingly superior and declare a TKO.
3.6 Points are awarded on the 10 point must system where the winner of the round gets awarded 10 points and the loser a lesser amount. The following can be used as a guide:

A 10/10 round – The judge cannot discern any difference between the fighters during the round.
A 10/9 round – The winner of the round displayed some marginal degree of superiority based on the criteria outlined in section 2.
A 10/8 round – The winner of the round displayed some degree of dominance during the round or scored at least 1 knockdown during the round.
A 10/7 round – The winner of the round totally dominated the round and probably inflicted multiple knockdowns to his opponent.

4 Techniques
Any punch or kick may be directed to any target on the body except for the groin. Spinning back fists are allowed.

5 Fouls
5.1 Two warnings lead to a points penalty. Depending on severity referee may go straight to points deduction or if appropriate a disqualification.
5.2 Three point deductions in one round is an automatic disqualification.

Fouls are:
» Head butts
» Elbows or knees
» Wrestling, throwing, submission techniques, choking, use of thumb and biting.
» Attacking while opponent is down or the referee is separating.
» Use of offensive language.
» Forcing opponent out of the ring.
» Intentionally leaving the ring.
» Neck grappling.
» Groin strikes.
» Stalling
» Continual holding or clinching
» Spitting out of mouthguard
» Deliberately falling to the ground
» Holding the leg

5.3 If the fighter leaves the ring of his own volition a count will also be applied. If the fighter has not re-entered the ring by the count of 10 the fighter will be deemed counted out. This is considered a TKO loss.

5.4 Scoring of the foul

5.4.1 Referees may at any time consult ringside officials including judges, A1 rules representatives, and the ringside physician to determine whether a foul was committed. It is up to the Referee to decide whether he lets it go, warns the fighter, deducts points, or disqualifies the fouling fighter.

5.4.1.1 If the referee determines that the foul was committed by one of the fighters then he will instruct the judges to deduct the appropriate number of points from the scorecard of the person committing the foul. The fouled fighter will be given an initial 2 minutes to recover. If this is insufficient then an additional 2 minutes may be given. Provided the fouler has not been disqualified and if the injured fighter cannot continue then the fight will go to the scorecards. All completed rounds will be added up and the winner determined from this. If the incident occurs in the first round a ‘technical draw’ shall be the decision.

5.4.1.2 If the referee determines that the injured fighter was responsible for his own injury the referee will not penalize his opponent in any manner. If the injured fighter cannot continue he will lose by TKO.

5.4.2 The referee can call time out after a foul. This is to be indicated to timekeeper.

5.4.3 In eliminator format events if a fighter cannot continue to the next round the A1 representatives have the discretionary power to nominate the most suitable fighter to progress to the next round.

5.4.4 If the referee has made a serious mistake the A1 representative may request a video review. This request can be made within 3 minutes of the mistake occurring and once viewed the A1 representative committee present on the evening will determine the result.

6 Disqualification
The referee may disqualify or deduct points under the following:

» A fighter does not obey the referee.
» Late for match. Poor manners
» A cornerman has entered the ring or touched a fighter during a round.
» The referee determines the fighter does not have the will to fight.
» Fouling as detailed above.

7 Advancement
» If an injury stops the fight then the uninjured fighter advances.
» If the winner on points cannot continue then the other fighter advances.

8 Objections
Objections to decisions can only be made in writing to A1 Management up to 2 weeks after the event.

9 Knockdown
Is defined as any part of the fighter’s body other than the sole of the foot touching the mat as a result of a DAMAGING attack by the opponent. Referee must signal this. MC shall count in time with the timekeeper. However, the referees count is the official count in all cases.

10 Cornerman
10.1 Only the chief cornerman may enter the ring at the end of the round.
10.2 Corners must follow instructions from the referee.
10.3 Cornermen must be dressed appropriately i.e. team uniform.

11 Tape
Must be signed and checked by referee. Must be applied at the venue.

12 Gloves
Over 70 kg fighters will use 10 oz gloves as supplied by A1. Under 70kg fighters will use 8oz gloves. Must be checked and sealed and signed by referee.

13 Medical Check
Before and after every bout the doctor will examine the fighter. Adrenalin is allowed.

14 Safety
There shall be a stretcher under the ring. There should be an emergency room allocated for seriously injured fighters with suitable ambulance access.

15 Making weight
15.1 If a fighter fails to make weight which has been specified in his contract he may be subject at the promoters discretion a fine. The fine will be determined as follows:

.5-1.5 kgs over = 15% penalty
1.5-2.5 kgs over = 30% penalty
2.5-4 kgs over = 50% penalty
over 4 kgs = loss of purse

The forfeited prize money will be distributed 50% to opponent and 50% to the promoter.

15.2 Weigh in shall be conducted the day prior to the event. If a fighter cannot make the weight arrangements may be made where the fighter is permitted to weigh in again 2 hours prior to the commencement of the show.

16 Method of Counting Over a Fighter Who is Down
16.1 If a fighter is knocked down the referee will send the standing fighter to the furthest neutral corner of the ring. The timekeeper will immediately begin holding up fingers to determine how many seconds have passed. The referee will look to the timekeeper to pick up the count. The MC may also be counting in time with the timekeeper. The referee will audibly announce the passing of seconds and continue the count holding up fingers in front of the downed fighter. The referees count is the only official count.

16.2 A referee may apply a standing 8 count for a fighter who is visibly hurt regardless of whether he has been knocked down. A standing 8 count can also be applied if the fighter has been knocked down and regains his feet prior to the count of 8.

16.3 If in the opinion of the referee a fighter is unable to continue after a count the referee shall stop the fight. If the referee is unsure he may consult the ringside doctor at any time.

16.4 If a fighter fails to rise before the count of 10 the referee shall wave off the bout.

16.5 If in the opinion of the referee the fighter is unlikely to rise before the count of 10 or is in danger and requires immediate medical attention he shall wave off the contest prior to reaching the count of 10.

17 Announcing of Winner
At the conclusion of a bout the referee shall collect all scorecards and wait until all scorecards are tallied and the result read out by the ringside MC before raising the hand of the victor. This is regardless of whether the bout has finished due to the ringing of the bell or due to KO, TKO, or disqualification.

18 Format for 32 Man Eliminator Tournament
The tournament will be held over 3 days. Part 1 and Part 2 will be conducted as follows:

16 fighters will fight under A1 rules over 3 x 2 minute rounds. An additional 2 rounds may be fought in the event of a draw to determine a winner. Winners of 7 main bouts will progress to Part 3 of the tournament. Winners of reserve bouts may proceed to Part 3 of the tournament. The promoter retains the right to substitute a reserve fighter with a wildcard entry of his choice. Part 3 of the tournament will comprise elimination bouts (16 – 8 – 4 – 2) until there is a single fighter remaining who shall be declared the winner.
